Back Pain

Back Pain

Virtually everyone knows somebody who deals with a substantial degree of back pain. This is because back pain is not only a chronic condition that is widespread, but there are also multiple potential causes of back pain. We put our bodies through stress so many ways and our backs are quite often where we carry the strongest burden.

Regenerative therapy through autologous transplantation (cells obtained through the same individual) has shown promise in medical trials of improving the symptoms of back pain. However, can cells obtained through an outside source be equally effective in treating a variety of conditions resulting in back pain, such as regenerative medicine from umbilical cord allograft? At Vitality Integrative Wellness, we believe that it can based on a number of patients we have treated this way at our clinic in Irvine, CA. We use the same MSCs present in autologous solutions, but in stronger concentrations. Read on for an explanation of these terms and how regenerative medicine with umbilical cord allograft may be useful in treating a wide variety of symptoms of back pain.

MSCs for Back Pain

Regenerative medicine experts point to MSCs, or mesenchymal stem cells, for the success of regenerative therapies in treating many symptoms of back pain. MSCs are specialty stem cells with the ability to differentiate into multiple different cell types. When directed to the source of pain by cytokines, or messenger enzymes, MSCs may take on cellular roles there for regenerative purposes.

This is why patients with injuries or conditions that limit movement involving the back and resulting in pain may report a decrease in pain level or an increase in range of movement following regenerative therapy. Regenerative medicine has the ability to regenerate damaged or lost material, such as cartilage, nerves or other essential tissues. By treating the symptoms of back pain through targeting the actual source of the pain, regenerative therapy may be a great option for qualified candidates.

Compared to autologous solutions, many experts prefer umbilical cord allograft, or regenerative medicine obtained through harvesting of donor umbilical cords from live, healthy births. The reason is that you lose stem cells as you age, meaning an autologous solution will have lower concentrations of MSCs than those obtained from a young donor source. Your body also doesn’t reject stem cells the way it would an organ transplant from an unmatched donor. The differential capabilities of stem cells, particularly MSCs, make them highly effective in this way.

Back Conditions Treated with Regenerative Medicine

Many conditions affecting the back may be treated with regenerative medicine, including:

  • Back Instability
  • Degenerative Disc
  • Annular Tears
  • SI Joint Pain
  • Chronic Paravertebral Muscle Atrophy
  • Facet and Sacroiliac Joint Syndrome
  • Lumbar Facet Injury

Take the case of Jack Nicklaus, a legendary golfer who had suffered a lifetime of severe back pain at the hands of Facet Joint Syndrome. Facet-Joint Syndrome is a degenerative disease of the spinal column where a loss of fluid in the nucleus pulposus leads to decreased elasticity and resilience in the intervertebral discs. It can result in segmental instability and additional stress on the facet joints (and a great deal of pain).

Nicklaus had grown accustomed to some quick relief options such as cortisone shots, but the long-term pain persisted. As reported in Healthline, the 78-year old golfer reported that stem cell therapy (regenerative therapy) was more effective than anything else he tried.

Cases like these happen more often than you think, and we handle them daily at our clinic. Patients spend years seeking relief only to find that their back pain persists as approaches like cortisone shots and pain medications become less and less effective.
