Your sciatic nerve runs down your lower back, through to your pelvis and buttocks, and down each of your legs. The sciatic nerve is the primary nerve of the leg and the largest nerve in the entire body. Many conditions may result in sciatica, or pain originating from the sciatic nerve.
While sciatica usually heals on its own, some conditions like chronic sciatica are lifelong. Even acute sciatica may be especially painful and less responsive to conventional treatments under certain circumstances. In these cases, standard treatments may not go far enough in resolving the problem in a timely manner. At Vitality Integrative Wellness, we offer regenerative therapy in addition to conventional medicine to treat the symptoms of conditions like sciatica in effective new ways for qualified patients.
Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica is causes by pressure on the sciatic nerve. It may be caused by many different conditions, including:
While there are many potential causes of sciatica and ways to diagnose the condition, sometimes a specific cause remains unknown.
Symptoms of Sciatica
Every patient is unique and may experience symptoms of sciatica differently. However, some commonly reported symptoms of sciatica include:
These symptoms may be associated with other conditions as well and require a doctor to make an official diagnosis. Contact Dr. Nassiry at our office in Irvine today!
Treating Sciatica
Standard treatments of sciatica include:
There can be issues that occur with any of these treatment options. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may not work as well after repeated use or for extreme cases. Movement to reduce inflammation may be difficult if the condition is causing pain or other issues that are limiting movement in the first places. Applied heat or cold may not work fast enough. Surgery may feel too invasive or may come with other potential risks or side effects.
For qualified patients, regenerative medicine with umbilical cord allograft and/or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections may be the preferred solution for qualified candidates. Utilizing MSCs, or cells with differential properties that may take on many different cellular roles, regenerative medicine derived from harvested umbilical cords may offer many regenerative benefits. Such benefits may include regenerating lost or damaged tissue, nerves or other material. PRP on the other hand contains growth factors that are also known for having regenerative properties. Regenerative medicine with umbilical cord allograft-derived MSCs may be combined with PRP to maximize potential benefits.
Unlike invasive surgery, regenerative medicine for sciatica is considered noninvasive or at least minimally invasive when combined with treatments for more advanced or chronic sciatica. To find out if regenerative therapy for sciatica is right for you, contact us today!
